HUMAN ENDEAVOUR & THE PLAN OF GOD
The Knowledge Tree, first introduced by Francis Bacon in The Advancement of Learning (1605) and fully developed in De Augmentis Scientiarum (1623), is one of the earliest and most influential classifications of human knowledge.
Based on the three classical faculties of the mind—Memory, Imagination, and Reason—it organizes every branch of learning into a coherent and systematic framework. Together, these faculties constitute the human intellect, enabling humanity to preserve experience, exercise creative imagination, and discover truth through rational inquiry. Memory gives rise to History, Imagination to Poetry, and Reason to Philosophy, from which the sciences, humanities, and arts are further developed.
Bacon's taxonomy established a new vision of learning founded on observation, inquiry, and the continual advancement of knowledge. It represents the organization of human knowledge through the faculties of the mind and the development of the human intellect, and remains a timeless framework for understanding the unity and diversity of human thought.
