ARTICLE OF
THE MASTER

1. Definition of Initiation

  • Initiation is a process of expansion of consciousness.
  • It is not a ceremonial event but an inner recognition of contact with the soul, and later with the Spiritual Triad and Monad.
  • Each initiation marks a definite stage of liberation from matter and alignment with higher aspects of being.
  • True initiation is the result of self-discipline, service, and soul integration, not of external rites.

2. The Five Major Initiations
(First Cycle)

Bailey describes five initiations that mark the path of human unfoldment up to Mastership:

1.  The Birth at Bethlehem
  • The birth of the Christ-consciousness in the heart.
  • Control over the physical body.
  • First conscious step onto the Path of Discipleship.

2.  The Baptism in Jordan
  • Purification through water = emotional nature mastered.
  • Full alignment with the soul begins.
  • Dedication to group service.

3.  The Transfiguration on the Mount
  • Personality fully integrated and subordinated to the soul.
  • Mental body purified and illumined.
  • First clear contact with the Monad.

4.  The Crucifixion (The Great Renunciation)
  • Complete renunciation of personal desire.
  • Freedom from attachment to form life.
  • The life of the soul is fully dominant.

5.  The Revelation (or Liberation)
  • Identification with the Monad rather than the soul.
  • Entry into the Fifth Kingdom: the Kingdom of Souls.
  • The initiate becomes a Master of Wisdom.

3. Higher Initiations
(Second Cycle)

  • Beyond the fifth, there are further initiations (up to the ninth for humanity, and more for higher beings).
  • Sixth Initiation – The Decision: The Master chooses one of the seven cosmic Paths of service.
  • Seventh Initiation – The Resurrection (higher aspect): Complete freedom from the cycle of rebirth.
  • Eighth and Ninth: Concern cosmic consciousness and functions within the planetary and solar Logoi.

4. Conditions of Initiation

  • Service: Selfless service to humanity is the hallmark.
  • Group consciousness: Initiation is entered not individually but as part of a group.
  • Purification and integration: The lower vehicles (physical, emotional, mental) must be purified and coordinated.
  • Meditation and occult training: Meditation, study, and esoteric discipline prepare the disciple.

5. The Role of the Hierarchy

  • The Hierarchy of Masters is the custodian of the Mysteries of Initiation.
  • The Christ (the World Teacher) acts as the Initiator for the first two initiations.
  • The Lord of the World (Sanat Kumara) confers the higher initiations.
  • The Hierarchy guards the "Door of Initiation" and admits disciples only when they are inwardly ready.

6. The Inner Science of Initiation

  • Initiation is part of a scientific process of planetary evolution.
  • Humanity as a whole is approaching the first initiation (the "Birth").
  • The New Age will see a wider distribution of initiation as the Mysteries are gradually restored.

Condensed Essence

Initiation is:
  • A natural stage in soul evolution,
  • Marked by expansions of consciousness,
  • Achieved through service, sacrifice, and group work,
  • Supervised by the Spiritual Hierarchy,
  • Leading from human limitation into divine freedom.

PROBATION PATH

  • The Probationary Path is the phase in which a human being:
          1.  Consciously turns toward the soul
          2.  Comes for the first time under hierarchical
                observation
  • Demonstrates fitness for discipleship
  • The Probationary Path is not symbolic but a definite testing period in which character, motive, and energy capacity are assessed.
  • It is not initiation, but preparation for initiation.

Preparation for Initiation

Fundamental Meaning

It is not:
  • A period of mystical ecstasy
  • A recognition of spiritual rank
  • Formal admission into an Ashram

It is a stage of inner tension, purification, and testing.

What the Probationary Path Is Not

  • The primary objective is:
To render the personality fit to receive and transmit soul energy safely.
  • This is achieved through:
    1.  Purification of motive
    2. Stabilization of character
    3. Control of the lower nature
    4. The emergence of group consciousness
  • The Hierarchy observes:
    1. Reliability
    2. Perseverance
    3. Impersonality
    4. Spontaneous service

The purpose of the Probationary Path

1. Test of character
  • Latent weaknesses are stimulated
  • Unresolved karma surfaces rapidly
  • The aspirant confronts:
  1. pride
  2. ambition
  3. criticism
  4. self-pity

“That which has not been conquered before probation is inevitably intensified.”

2. Tests of motive
The key question is not what the aspirant does, but why.

Common pitfalls:
  • Spiritual ambition
  • Desire for recognition
  • Attachment to teachings or teachers

The real test:
Is service more important than personal progress?

3. Tests of endurance
The Probationary Path is characterized by:
  • Periods of dryness
  • Withdrawal of emotional reassurance
  • Absence of confirmation

“Learning to go forward without inner reward.”

The three major tests on the probationary path

  • No Personal Contact
  • On the Probationary Path there is no direct relationship with a Master
  • The aspirant is under impersonal observation
  • The Master works through:
    1. life circumstances
    2. group energy
    3. karmic acceleration
  • Claims of personal Master contact at this stage are usually illusory.

The role of the Master on the Probationary Path

A person comes under hierarchical notice when:
  • Soul influence is regular
  • Service is naturally rendered
  • Meditation is stable
  • Moral integrity is present

When Observation Begins

A person comes under hierarchical notice when:
  • Soul influence is regular
  • Service is naturally rendered
  • Meditation is stable
  • Moral integrity is present

At this point one becomes:
An Accepted Disciple

This is not initiation, but:
  • Admission into an Ashram
  • Conscious cooperation with a Master
  • The beginning of systematic training

Tranition from probationary path to discipleship

Relationship to the First Initiation
The First Initiation (Birth) may occur:
  • At the close of the Probationary Path
  • Or early in discipleship
  • No initiation is possible without a successfully completed Probationary Path.

What is prepared
The Probationary Path:
  • Purifies the etheric-physical vehicle
  • Stabilizes the astral body
  • Integrates the personality sufficiently
This makes possible
  • The “birth of the Christ consciousness”
  • The first safe impact of hierarchical energy

The probationary path and the first initiation

Common experiences include:
  • Heightened inner tension
  • Apparent setbacks
  • Loss of familiar supports
  • A sense of isolation

These are signs of approach to the Path, not of failure.

Psychological experience of the probationary path

A crucial element in the teachings:
  • No one enters the Path alone
  • The Probationary Path is the first group-oriented stage

The aspirant learns to:
  • Forget the personal self
  • Function within group energy
  • Place service above self-development

Without this:
  • There is no discipleship
  • There is no initiation

The group dimension of the Probationary Path

The teachings explicitly warns against:
  • Obsession with initiations
  • Premature occult practices
  • Inadequate etheric purification
  • Personalization of impersonal teaching

“Too rapid progress is more dangerous than slow advance.”

Common and dangerous misunderstandings

The Essence of the Probationary Path
  • It is a testing ground
  • No recognition, only purification
  • No exaltation, only discipline
  • No Master contact, only hierarchical observation

Its Relationship to Initiation
  • The Probationary Path makes initiation possible
  • Initiation confirms what is already achieved
  • Nothing is conferred at initiation that has not already been inwardly attained

Synthesis

“Initiation does not confer attainment; it recognizes capacity.”

INITIATION 1 - BIRTH

The Birth of the Christ in
the Cave of the Heart

I. THE FIRST THREE INITIATIONS

Human Initiations –
Mastery of the Personality

Fundamental Meaning

The first initiation marks the first conscious incarnation of the soul within the personality. The soul is no longer an occasional influence but a recognized center of identity.

This initiation:
  • Is now being taken by large numbers of humanity
  • Is the goal of the present world crisis
  • Marks the beginning of conscious discipleship

Psychological Transformation

  • Control of the physical body
  • Right use of the etheric-physical vehicle
  • The instincts are subordinated to soul purpose
  • The disciple begins to live by inner values rather than outer desire

Energetic changes

  • The heart center awakens as a governing force
  • The etheric body becomes more responsive to soul energy
  • The first controlled inflow of hierarchical energy occurs

Symbolism

  • Birth
  • Light in darkness
  • The star over the head (symbol of the soul)

Hierarchical Aspect

  • The Christ acts as Initiator
  • The Rod of Initiation is applied at a low potency
  • The initiate is admitted to the outer periphery of an Ashram
“This initiation concerns the physical plane life of the disciple.”
Initiation, Human and Solar

INITIATION 2 - BAPTISM

Purification by Water

Fundamental Meaning

The second initiation signifies mastery of the astral nature — the world of desire, glamour, fear, devotion, and emotional reaction.

Bailey emphasizes that the astral plane is humanity’s greatest battlefield, and this initiation is therefore more difficult than the first.

Psychological Transformation

  • Emotional reactions are no longer controlling
  • Desire is transmuted into aspiration
  • Devotion is redirected from personal ideals to group service
  • Glamour is increasingly recognized and dissipated

Energetic Changes

  • The solar plexus center is subordinated to the heart
  • Astral energy is lifted into buddhic sensitivity
  • The disciple begins to respond to group feeling rather than personal emotion

Symbolism

  • Water
  • Cleansing
  • The Dove descending (intuition overshadowing emotion)

Hierarchical Aspect

  • Still administered by the Christ
  • The initiate is recognized as a probationary world server
  • The Ashram begins to use the disciple more actively
“This initiation marks release from the control of the astral plane.”

INITIATION 10-12

COSMIC INITIATIONS

Why the Tibetan stops at Initiation 9

    The Tibetan explicitly teaches that:
  • The first five initiations concern humanity
  • The sixth through ninth concern planetary and solar life
  • Beyond the ninth, the initiate enters purely cosmic evolution

The Tibetan says that beyond the ninth:
  • “All that can be said is symbolic and misleading.”

    Nevertheless, the Tibetan does indicate:
  • Further expansions of consciousness
  • Higher identifications
  • A progressive approach to Absolute Sonship

Thus Initiations 10–12 are not named or
ritualized, but can be structurally understood..

INITIATION 10

    The Tibetan explicitly teaches that:
  • The first five initiations concern humanity
  • The sixth through ninth concern planetary and solar life
  • Beyond the ninth, the initiate enters purely cosmic evolution

The Tibetan says that beyond the ninth:
  • “All that can be said is symbolic and misleading.”

    Nevertheless, the Tibetan does indicate:
  • Further expansions of consciousness
  • Higher identifications
  • A progressive approach to Absolute Sonship

Thus Initiations 10–12 are not named or
ritualized, but can be structurally understood..

Implied: Initiation of Cosmic Purpose

INITIATION 10

Status in Bailey’s Teaching
  • Not named
  • Not described ceremonially
  • Clearly implied as the next expansion beyond Solar Logos identification

Core Meaning
The Tenth Initiation marks the transcendence of solar system limitation.

Up to the ninth initiation:
  • Consciousness is identified with the Solar Logos
  • Evolution is still occurring within a solar scheme

At the Tenth Initiation:
  • Identification shifts beyond the Solar Logos
  • The initiate becomes responsive to extra-solar cosmic Purpose

This is the first initiation where:
  • The solar system itself is perceived as a vehicle
  • Purpose is known before manifestation

Consciousness Shift
  • From Logos-consciousness
  • To Cosmic Purpose-consciousness

Bailey indicates that this corresponds to:
  • The initiate functioning within constellational life
  • Awareness of cosmic Rays, not just the seven solar Rays

Energy and Will
  • Will is no longer directive but synthetic
  • The initiate no longer uses will — will is identity
  • All differentiation of Ray qualities begins to dissolve

Function
At this level, the initiate:
  • No longer serves a planetary or solar Plan
  • Participates in cosmic calibration of Purpose
  • Influences whole systems of evolution

Implied: Initiation of Cosmic Purpose

INITIATION 11

Status in Bailey’s Teaching
  • Mentioned only indirectly
  • Linked to the Path of Absolute Sonship
  • Associated with the highest Paths open to cosmic Lives

Core Meaning
The Eleventh Initiation marks universal identification.

Here:
  • All distinction between subject and object disappears
  • The initiate no longer “identifies with” life — is life

Bailey associates this state with:
  • Identification beyond Logos-consciousness
  • Entry into universal Being

Consciousness Shift
  • From Purpose-awareness
  • To Being-awareness

This is no longer consciousness of something.

It is:
  • Pure existence
  • Pure synthesis
  • Pure presence

Energy and Substance

  • No longer works with energy
  • No longer transmits force
  • Exists as a center of universal equilibrium

Bailey hints that:
  • “Even Shamballa is transcended.”

Function
Function as we understand it ceases.

Instead:
  • The initiate becomes a cosmic point of balance
  • A stabilizing factor in universal manifestation
  • Beyond evolution as humanity understands it

Implied: Initiation of Universal Identification

INITIATION 12

Status in Bailey’s Teaching
  • This is the absolute limit of what Bailey hints at.
  • She explicitly states:

“Beyond this, all is unrevealed.”

Core Meaning
  • The Twelfth Initiation is complete identification with the One Life.

This is:
  • Not mastery
  • Not service
  • Not evolution

It is:
Absolute Sonship

Consciousness
  • No consciousness of self
  • No consciousness of other
  • No awareness of purpose or plan

Only:
  • Pure unity
  • Unconditioned Being

Bailey makes clear:

  • Even the concept of Logos disappears
  • Even cosmic differentiation ceases

Energy
  • Energy as such no longer exists
  • There is no direction, no impulse, no motion

Only absolute stillness that contains all motion

Relation to Manifestation
From this level:
  • Manifestation is optional
  • Withdrawal is complete
  • Creation is known as an act of will before will

Implied: Absolute Sonship / Identification with the One)

ROD OF INITIATION

The Rod of Initiation is not a symbolic object. In Bailey’s teaching it is:

“A cosmic instrument for the transmission of electrical energy.”

It is a conductor of force, used to apply a precise and measured impact of higher energy to the initiate’s centers at the moment of initiation.

Bailey emphasizes repeatedly:
  • The Rod is scientific, not ceremonial
  • It is an energy transmitter, not a badge of authority
  • Without it, initiation could not safely occur

THE FLAMING DIAMOND

1. WHAT THE ROD OF INITIATION IS

Definition

Initiation involves:
  • The sudden inflow of higher electrical force
  • From levels of consciousness normally inaccessible
  • Into vehicles not naturally adapted to that voltage

Without regulation, this force would:
  • Destroy the subtle bodies
  • Shatter the nervous system
  • Disintegrate the etheric centers

The Rod exists to:

Apply energy safely, rhythmically, and lawfully.

2. WHY THE ROD IS NECESSARY

The Problem Initiation Solves

Bailey describes the force used as:
  • Electrical
  • Fiery
  • Will-qualified

This is not astral or emotional force, nor ordinary mental energy.

Depending on the initiation, the Rod transmits:
Soul energy (lower initiations)
  • Triadal energy (higher initiations)
  • Shamballic will (fourth initiation onward)

3. THE NATURE OF THE ENERGY TRANSMITTED

  • Used for the first two initiations
  • Held by the Christ
  • Transmits hierarchical (second-ray) energy
  • Applied gently and briefly
    This Rod stimulates:
  • The heart center
  • The etheric system
  • Soul-personality alignment

IV. DIFFERENT RODS OF INITIATION

1. The Planetary Rod

  • Used at the third initiation
  • Involves the presence of Sanat Kumara
  • Applies a much stronger electrical current
  • Affects the head center
    This Rod:
  • Initiates first contact with the Spiritual Triad
  • Marks the end of purely human evolution

2. The Hierarchical rod

  • Used at the third initiation
  • Involves the presence of Sanat Kumara
  • Applies a much stronger electrical current
  • Affects the head center
    This Rod:
  • Initiates first contact with the Spiritual Triad
  • Marks the end of purely human evolution

3. The Cosmic Rod (Greater Rod)

  • Used from the fourth initiation onward
  • Wielded by the Lord of the World
  • Transmits Shamballa force (first-ray energy)

    Bailey states clearly:
“The fourth initiation would be fatal without the
    intervention of the greater Rod.”

    This Rod:
  • Shatters the causal body
  • Destroys soul limitation
  • Forces identification with Spirit

3. The Cosmic Rod (Greater Rod)
