1. Definition of Initiation

  • Initiation is a process of expansion of consciousness.
  • It is not a ceremonial event but an inner recognition of contact with the soul, and later with the Spiritual Triad and Monad.
  • Each initiation marks a definite stage of liberation from matter and alignment with higher aspects of being.
  • True initiation is the result of self-discipline, service, and soul integration, not of external rites.

2. The Five Major Initiations
(First Cycle)

Bailey describes five initiations that mark the path of human unfoldment up to Mastership:

1.  The Birth at Bethlehem
  • The birth of the Christ-consciousness in the heart.
  • Control over the physical body.
  • First conscious step onto the Path of Discipleship.

2.  The Baptism in Jordan
  • Purification through water = emotional nature mastered.
  • Full alignment with the soul begins.
  • Dedication to group service.

3.  The Transfiguration on the Mount
  • Personality fully integrated and subordinated to the soul.
  • Mental body purified and illumined.
  • First clear contact with the Monad.

4.  The Crucifixion (The Great Renunciation)
  • Complete renunciation of personal desire.
  • Freedom from attachment to form life.
  • The life of the soul is fully dominant.

5.  The Revelation (or Liberation)
  • Identification with the Monad rather than the soul.
  • Entry into the Fifth Kingdom: the Kingdom of Souls.
  • The initiate becomes a Master of Wisdom.

3. Higher Initiations
(Second Cycle)

  • Beyond the fifth, there are further initiations (up to the ninth for humanity, and more for higher beings).
  • Sixth Initiation – The Decision: The Master chooses one of the seven cosmic Paths of service.
  • Seventh Initiation – The Resurrection (higher aspect): Complete freedom from the cycle of rebirth.
  • Eighth and Ninth: Concern cosmic consciousness and functions within the planetary and solar Logoi.

4. Conditions of Initiation

  • Service: Selfless service to humanity is the hallmark.
  • Group consciousness: Initiation is entered not individually but as part of a group.
  • Purification and integration: The lower vehicles (physical, emotional, mental) must be purified and coordinated.
  • Meditation and occult training: Meditation, study, and esoteric discipline prepare the disciple.

5. The Role of the Hierarchy

  • The Hierarchy of Masters is the custodian of the Mysteries of Initiation.
  • The Christ (the World Teacher) acts as the Initiator for the first two initiations.
  • The Lord of the World (Sanat Kumara) confers the higher initiations.
  • The Hierarchy guards the "Door of Initiation" and admits disciples only when they are inwardly ready.

6. The Inner Science of Initiation

  • Initiation is part of a scientific process of planetary evolution.
  • Humanity as a whole is approaching the first initiation (the "Birth").
  • The New Age will see a wider distribution of initiation as the Mysteries are gradually restored.

  • The Probationary Path is the phase in which a human being:
          1.  Consciously turns toward the soul
          2.  Comes for the first time under hierarchical

  • The Probationary Path is not symbolic but a definite testing period in which character, motive, and energy capacity are assessed.
  • It is not initiation, but preparation for initiation.

Fundamental Meaning

It is not:
  • A period of mystical ecstasy
  • A recognition of spiritual rank
  • Formal admission into an Ashram

It is a stage of inner tension, purification, and testing.

What the Probationary Path Is Not

  • The primary objective is:
    To render the personality fit to receive and transmit soul energy safely.
  • This is achieved through:
    1.  Purification of motive
    2. Stabilization of character
    3. Control of the lower nature
    4. The emergence of group consciousness
  • The Hierarchy observes:
    1. Reliability
    2. Perseverance
    3. Impersonality
    4. Spontaneous service

The purpose of the Probationary Path

1. Test of character
  • Latent weaknesses are stimulated
  • Unresolved karma surfaces rapidly
  • The aspirant confronts:
  1. pride
  2. ambition
  3. criticism
  4. self-pity

“That which has not been conquered before probation is inevitably intensified.”

2. Tests of motive
The key question is not what the aspirant does, but why.

The real test:
Is service more important than personal progress?

3. Tests of endurance
The Probationary Path is characterized by:
  • Periods of dryness
  • Withdrawal of emotional reassurance

  • No Personal Contact
  • On the Probationary Path there is no direct relationship with a Master
  • The aspirant is under impersonal observation

  • Claims of personal Master contact at this stage are usually illusory.

The role of the Master on the Probationary Path

A person comes under hierarchical notice when:
  • Soul influence is regular
  • Service is naturally rendered
  • Meditation is stable
  • Moral integrity is present

When Observation Begins

A person comes under hierarchical notice when:
  • Soul influence is regular
  • Service is naturally rendered

At this point one becomes:
An Accepted Disciple

This is not initiation, but:
  • Admission into an Ashram
  • Conscious cooperation with a Master
  • The beginning of systematic training

Tranition from probationary path to discipleship

Relationship to the First Initiation
The First Initiation (Birth) may occur:
  • At the close of the Probationary Path
  • Or early in discipleship
  • No initiation is possible without a successfully completed Probationary Path.

What is prepared
The Probationary Path:
  • Purifies the etheric-physical vehicle

The second initiation signifies mastery of the astral nature — the world of desire, glamour, fear, devotion, and emotional reaction.

Bailey emphasizes that the astral plane is humanity’s greatest battlefield, and this initiation is therefore more difficult than the first.    

Psychological Transformation

  • This is often called the first major initiation.
